What You Need to Become a Clipper: The Full Checklist
A clipper takes long videos that already exist, such as streams, podcasts, matches and shows, cuts the best moments into short vertical clips, and posts them on their own social media accounts. On SEMA Rewards, brands pay for the views those clips get.
The list of what you need is shorter than most people expect. Here it is, in the order you will need each thing, followed by what you do not need and what will stop you.
1. A phone and an internet connection
That is the equipment. You can find a campaign, edit a clip, post it, submit it and withdraw your earnings from one phone. Any editing app works, as long as it can:
- Trim a long video down to one moment.
- Export vertical video, 9:16, at 1080 × 1920 when your footage allows.
- Put text and subtitles on screen, since plenty of people watch with the sound off.
You also need your phone's screen recorder. Most campaigns ask for a recording of a clip's analytics when you claim what it earned.
A laptop makes long footage quicker to scrub through, but it is a convenience, not a requirement.
2. A free SEMA Rewards account
Create a creator account at semarewards.com. Signing up is free, and so is joining a campaign. You need to be at least 18, or legally able to enter a binding agreement where you live, as the Terms of Service say.
When you first sign in, SEMA asks where you are based (country, province and city), what kind of creator you are, and which niches you like. Brands pick creators by region and some campaigns are local, so answer honestly.
One SEMA account is all you need, and all you are allowed: one person, one account. Extra accounts break the rules and can get every one of them suspended.
3. A social account to post from, verified on SEMA
Your clips go out on your own account, on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Threads or X. Each campaign lists the platforms it accepts. Before you can submit a clip, the account has to be:
- Public. A private account cannot be checked, and a private post cannot be counted.
- Verified on SEMA. You prove the account is yours by pasting a short code into its bio. SEMA never asks for your password. On TikTok the account needs at least one public post before it can be checked.
- Yours alone. A social account verified by one SEMA account cannot be added by another.
- Set up with analytics. A claim needs a recording of them. On Instagram, insights only exist on a professional account, so switch before you post.
A brand-new account is fine. Warm it up in one niche for a few days before your first campaign clip, so the platform learns who to show your clips to. Clipping by Niche explains which account to build for which campaigns.
4. Five basic editing skills
You do not need to be an editor. You need to do five things well, every time:
- Find a moment that stands on its own. A punchline, a clutch play, an honest answer. A viewer who never saw the stream should get it.
- Open on it. Viewers decide in the first seconds. Start at the peak, not at the build-up.
- Reframe for a phone. Keep the speaker or the action in the middle of a vertical frame.
- Caption it. Big, readable subtitles, clear of the platform's buttons at the bottom and on the right.
- Cut as soon as the point lands. A short clip people finish beats a long one they leave halfway.
The free lessons in the SEMA Academy teach each one, starting with The 3-second hook that stops the scroll. For where your footage comes from, and which moments to pick, read How to Choose Source Material for Your Clips.
5. An hour or two a day, at the right time
Clipping rewards being quick. Every campaign accepts a post's link only for a limited time after it goes up, 12 hours by default or the campaign's own window, so you post and submit in the same sitting. The best moments of a stream or an episode are also freshest on the day they air.
A steady routine matters more than long hours: watch, cut a few clips, and post them while people are still talking about the topic.
6. The habit of reading the brief
Every campaign has a brief and rules, and the campaign team reviews every clip against them before it earns. Before you edit, read the Brief & Rules tab: what to clip, which footage to use, and the hashtags, mentions and links your caption must carry. Missing even one tag can send a clip back.
How to Pick a Campaign walks through a campaign page from top to bottom, and How CPM Works in Clipping shows how views become money.
7. A way to get paid
What your clips earn reaches your SEMA wallet through a claim, and from there you withdraw it. For that you need:
- A bank account or e-wallet in your own name. More than 20 Indonesian banks are supported, as are GoPay, OVO, DANA and ShopeePay, and USDT for crypto.
- Your KTP, once, for a withdrawal above Rp 100.000. The name on it has to match the name on your withdrawal account.
At the time of writing, the minimum withdrawal is Rp 50.000 and each withdrawal costs a flat Rp 10.000. How to Withdraw Your Earnings covers every step.
What you do not need
- Followers. You are paid for views, not followers. A campaign that wants a minimum follower count says so on its page, and plenty of clippers start from zero.
- Experience. The Academy and the daily class on Discord take you from your first clip onwards.
- A camera or paid software. You cut footage that already exists, on your phone.
- Your face on camera. Clipping works with other people's content. If you would rather film your own videos about products, that is UGC: read What You Need to Become a UGC Creator.
- Money to start. Signing up and joining campaigns are free.
What will stop you
A few things get clips rejected or accounts suspended. Know them before you start:
- Re-uploading someone else's clip, or posting the same clip twice. Only your own edits count.
- Bought views, bots or follow-for-follow. Any trick that inflates your numbers breaks SEMA's rules.
- Deleting or hiding a post you submitted. Before a withdrawal is sent, every clip behind it is checked again, and a missing one stops it.
- Footage you have no right to use. Use what the brief gives you or allows.
Your first day
- Sign up, and answer where you are based.
- Open Start here: six short missions take you from verifying your account to your first withdrawal, each one beside the button that does it.
- Verify the account you will post from.
- Pick one campaign in a niche you like, read its brief, and make one clip.
- Post it, and submit the link straight away.
